Von wann bis wann hat dieser Autor noch gleich gelebt? -Hatte jener nun einen Kahlschädel oder einen Rauschebart? Oder beides? Die Droste hatte doch solche biedermeierlichen Korkenzieherlocken? - Und in der ganz alten Zeit -Hans Sachs? Grimmelshausen? weiß man vielleicht schon gar nicht mehr so recht Bescheid. Bei solchen oder ähnlichen, vielleicht auch gewichtigeren Problemen können die Dichter-Porträts Abhilfe schaffen: die bekanntesten deutschsprachigen Autoren von der Reformation (im Mittelalter kann ja von einem auch nur halbwegs realistischen Porträt noch nicht die Rede sein) bis zur jüngeren Gegenwart werden mit den wichtigsten Daten zu ihrem Leben und Werk und zugleich soweit vorhanden mit einem charakteristischen Porträtbild vorgestellt, so daß der Band ebensogut als Lexikon zu benutzen ist, wie er als Bilderbuch zum Blättern einlädt.

Deutsche literatur geschichte

Als dieses Buch 1979 erstmals erschien, war das Feld der Literatur geschichtsschreibung von Darstellungen beherrscht, die um 1950 entstanden waren und im Zeichen der nach 1945 gebotenen Ideologiefreiheit an die seit Wilhelm Dilthey üblich gewordene geistesgeschichtliche Betrachtung der deutschen Literaturentwicklung angeknüpft hatten. Wie sehr die mit diesem hilflosen Rückgriff in Kauf zu nehmenden Unzulänglichkeiten auf den Deutschunterricht der Generation, der die Autoren dieser Literaturgeschichte entstammen, eingewirkt haben, zeigt die Tatsache, daß das Warum und Wozu einer neuen literaturgeschichtlichen Sichtweise erst Mitte der siebziger Jahre neu begründet worden ist. Inzwischen darf die Bedeutung der sozialgeschichtlichen Dimension von Literatur, die hier neben der ästhetischen besonders ins Blickfeld gerückt worden ist, als Gemeingut der Literaturbetrachtung gelten. Die Anerkennung, welche der Deutschen Literaturgeschichte in den vergangenen zehn Jahren entgegengebracht worden ist, be-trachten deren Verfasser als Bestätigung ihrer Absicht, über Strecken hinweg mit den Darstellungs-, Einteilungs- und Auswahlprinzipien herkömmlicher Art zu brechen und ein neues literarisches Selbstverständnis sichtbar zu machen.
