Reading History in the Roman Empire

The twenty-first century could justifiably be deemed an era that was highly fertile to examining ancient readerships of classical historiography. This is because recent decades have contributed to the liberation of modern scholarship from the nineteenth century’s persistently positivist outlook in scrutinizing the “objectivity” of ancient historians, which often led scholars to view them as no more than celebrated exemplars of critical acumen and scientific conscientiousness.
